Straw-hatted gold miner

Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate
Archives of Modern Conflict OR National Gallery of Canada
Straw-hatted gold miner identified in pencil behind the image as J. Butler of Fall River MA proudly displaying large hand tinted gold nugget atop a D handle shovel which rests against large mining pick. The shirt has also been tinted to the typical blue of a miners flannel shirt. These shirts normally came in three colors, grey, blue and red. (Matt Isenburg)
