The former Marie Berna (born New York: 1846 - died Budesheim/Hessen) who later became Countess Marie Oriola, (Grõfin Marie Oriola) became a member of the Free Photographic Association in Berlin in 1896. She may be best remembered today however for commissioning the Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin to paint his masterpiece: Island of the Dead in 1880. This painting is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
