Elephant "Hebe" and her baby "Young America"

Carte de visite
2 1/2 x 4 in (6 x 10 cm)

KaufmaNelson Vintage Photographs
A.W. Rothengatter & Co. (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States)

Copy photograph, with the printed photographer's credit, copyright information, and extended caption, and "Dad's elephant" written in ink, in a later hand, mount verso. NOTE: "Young America," later called "Little Columbia" was the first elephant known to be born in captivity. At the time her mother "Hebe" was part of the Cooper and Bailey Circus. P. T. Barnum offered to buy the baby, and when turned down, suggested that he and Cooper merge their shows. When Barnum died in 1891 Bailey purchased his circus, and the Barnum and Bailey Circus was born. The captive-born elephant "Columbia" became increasingly aggressive as she aged and was euthanised in 1907.
