(Ron Coddington, 11 April 2020) Rabbit iconography has been a subject for artists from ancient times to the present. Egyptian hieroglyphs. Roman mosaics. Medieval manuscripts. Oil paintings and engravings by master artists. This man posed with a framed study of three rabbits, possibly a lithograph, continues the long and ongoing tradition. Judging from the expression of satisfaction and pride on his face, he is the artist. A tax stamp on the back of the mount dates this photograph between 1864-1866.
Photographer Gilbert O. Sweet (1835-1883) was of the right age to have served in the military during the Civil War, though there is no evidence that he enlisted.
