Leslie Adkin 1911, 9-17 February "Tararua coal." Specimens of slickensided carbonaceous slatey shale or argillite on pinched-out cores of greywacke and vein quartz. The high polish is due to shear under immense pressure during intense folding of the oldest deformation of these rocks.
