In August 1856 quarrymen discovered bones in the Kleine Feldhofer Grotte in the limestone quarries in the Neanderthal 13 km east of Dusseldorf, Germany. The discovery was first published by Johann C. Fuhlrott "Menschliche _berreste aus einer Felsengrotte des Dusselthals", Verhandlungen des naturhistorischen Vereins der preussischen Rheinlande und Westphalens, Volume 16, 1859, p.131-153
