The National Maritime Museum provides the context for this photograph:

'Discovery' (left) and 'Alert' (right) secured to the ice below Cape Prescott. This gave the crews of the two ships time to explore and exercise the dogs with the sledges. The dogs were described as being fast, and some had found a way of getting out of their harnesses. One activity recorded by Lt. Parr was 'a football match between the two ships, in which the Discovery's [team] went very much to leeward, but as the blue jacket [sailors] have not the slightest idea of the rules it becomes rather a nondescript game'.
