Heliographed (Plate) & Printed by: Georg Buxenstein & Comp. (Berlin)
The Brothers Hofmeister photographed an old woman hunched over supported by a cane in 1899. The photograph was transformed via the gum bichromate process into a night scene in 1900. "The brothers Theodor and Oskar Hofmeister frequently used brushes to retouch their photographs. The three prints of their famous Old Woman (figs. 28-30) reveal the successive stages of the process." (Source: Impressionist Camera: Pictorial Photography in Europe, 1888-1918 Merrell Publishers, 2006: p.17.) The three examples of this photograph: gelatin silver, photogravure and gum bichromate can be seen on pages 58-59 of this book.
