8. | ![]() | Unidentified photographer n.d. Sleeping Baby Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs Courtesy of Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs (ia906) Sixth plate daguerreotype of an apparently sleeping child, with applied hand-coloring in flesh, red, and blue. Original seals intact, housed in full case with split spine. A really charming image of a baby who to my eye appears to be sleeping, although this is also an effect which period post-mortem images strove to achieve. Flesh tones have been subtly tinted and there is red and blue applied to the cloth he rests upon. |

A young boy with his beach toys Tintype, 1/6 plate Stereographica - Antique Photographica Courtesy of Bryan and Page Ginns (#17 / 156) It is a studio image with a beach scene backdrop. The velvet pad holds a lock of his hair in a blue ribbon. It also has an obituary announcement, "Died - In Brookfield Vt., November 4th of Diphtheria, Alvia, son of S. and S. P. Major, aged 10 years and 11 months." |
16. | ![]() | Unidentified photographer n.d. Sisters holding Daguerreotype of mother Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate Private collection of Erin Waters The one at left holds a tall vertical case, just slightly open. The one at right holds open a case to reveal a daguerreotype of a woman. This is likely a portrait of their deceased mother, with the tall case some artifact associated with her. The pristine plate shows the figures in warm tones against a creamy cool background. Previously auctioned: Be-Hold (49 / 4) |
17. | ![]() | Unidentified photographer n.d. Boy with daguerreotype viewer Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (49 / 4) The boy, possibly the daguerreotypist's son, holds a case with an inlay design. There's another case on the table. There is a framed magnifier on a stand, under which a plate is placed, so the image appears on the magnifier surface. This is a rare device that I've never before seen depicted in a daguerreotype. (Larry Gottheim) |
18. | ![]() | Unidentified photographer n.d. Portrait of a young girl Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate Capitol Gallery Courtesy of Capitol Gallery (Fall 2007 Auction, #11) Artistry during the daguerreian era can seem somewhat limited at times so a photographer's success at innovation in creating an illusion for us can be surprising. This stunning sixth-plate daguerreotype is a perfect example of such creativity. We see an attractive young girl staring into out into the world, perhaps daydreaming about the story she is reading. She points to a favorite passage in her book while the proceeding page has an illustration that is slightly visible. The photographer has posed her leaning on what appears to be a porch rail or open window with a cascading vine visible to the right. The thought provoking pose gives us pause to speculate on what this young woman accomplished in her life. Did she become an author, a teacher, or globe traveler in search of all the places she read about in her youth? Obviously she is from a family of means as she is dressed in a gorgeous matching outfit with very intricate lace gloves. The plate itself is equal in quality with hand tinting to her face and lips. There is a hint of perimeter tarnish and at an angle, in the right lighting, a couple of buffing marks can be seen. There is a very small mat mark on the right perimeter that is almost impossible to see. The image is housed in a full leather case with a floral theme on the front. The velvet mat on the inside follows in suit with a floral design too. |
19. | ![]() | Rufus P. Anson n.d. Portrait of a Girl with Ringlets Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (50 / 9) The unusual case opens to reveal a 1/2 plate ambrotype of three sisters in the center. In the left panel there are two 1/6 plate daguerreotypes. One is a lovely image of a mother holding a tiny baby. (There is dust on the underside of the glass.) Below that is a 1/6 plate daguerreotype of a woman, by Anson. Possibly she is the mother of the first image. The right panel has, on top, a superb 1/6 plate by Anson, a close portrait of a girl in ringlets, with bows on her dress tinted red. Beneath is another 1/6 plate in a stippled octagonal mat, of a woman in a bonnet holding a case. This again could be the mother. All the images are sealed into the velvet-covered surface. The back of the case has a "stand" that lets the frame stand open to reveal all the plates. |
20. | ![]() | Unidentified photographer n.d. Black Boy with his Dog Tintype CDV size Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (50 / 32) His hat is on some kind of strangely covered studio table. There's a landscape backdrop showing a fence. His formal stance - you can see the base of the posing stand and wide-eyed expression, gives this an appealing and also thought-provoking character. The dog also has a formal pose looking in at the left. This CDV-size tintype is in an arched mat [the preserver lacks its bottom] in a very rare and desirable case, specially made for this size image. The CDV-size thermoplastic cases that one encounters have a compartment that is slightly too small for normal American CDV's and CDV size tintypes. This leather case fits them perfectly. There are loose flaps at left and right that are meant to open in the center and there seems to have been a leather panel in the center of the back that is now missing. |
21. | ![]() | Unidentified photographer n.d. Girls with dove Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (50 / 16) These daguerreotypes are in a fine book-style case with a hinged latch, with a central panel that holds one daguerreotype on each side. The first plate shows two charming girls, sisters, standing on each side of a table. One holds her pet dove. The second + plate shows a seated mother with two daughters beside her. These don't appear to be the same girls, but the two plates belong together. They both have their original seals, similar in each. The seals on the first plate are loose. The case is black papier-mÔché with gilding and tortoise shell floral design, not listed in Berg's book on cases. |

Girl on rocking horse Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc Courtesy of Larry Gottheim (Auction: Feb 21, 2008, 51, part 1 / lot 44) There are splendid feathers in her velvet hat. Her fancy dress includes a horizontally striped bodice. She's sitting sidesaddle, so we see her shoes. The rocking horse moved slightly. There are mat abrasions at the very bottom. 1/6 plate in a decorated elliptical mat, in a case with repaired spine. |

39. | ![]() | Unidentified photographer 1850 (ca) Portrait of a young girl Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate Archives of Modern Conflict OR National Gallery of Canada Girl wearing dress with piece of material from the same dress pinned to opposite side of case. The colors of the snippet of material are as fresh as when the material was first made, probably since it was protected from the environment in the closed daguerreotype case. This gives us an unusual chance to see how some colors reproduce in a daguerreotype. Note the design is printed on the cloth as opposed to being woven. Though not really an "occupational", it seemed the girl was so proud of the dress that she wanted to send a message forward concerning its presence in the image. (Matt Isenburg) |
