A true nineteenth century polymath whose work included chemistry, geology, botany, metereology, and photography. His most notable photographic work was taken in Australia where he arrived in 1854 at the age of 19 to assay the quality of the minerals extracted during the Australian Gold Rush and during this period he took photographs of the goldfields. In 1859 he returned to England and published important works in the fields of science and economics. In 1876 he became Professor of Polical Economy at University College, London.
