French amateur photographer and chemical engineer who visited China and Japan (1865-1866) to collect zoological specimens, including pheasants, partridges and ducks, on behalf of the Société zoologique d'Acclimatation. During his visit he took photographs and stereoviews of Shanghai and Peking that were brought together as a portfolio after his return to Paris. He received a bronze medal for his photographs at the 1867 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) in Paris.
Champion's stereoviews were published as series by Charles Gaudin; B.K. Editeur. Paris [A. Block]. The series were Chine & Japon; Asiatic Views. China; and Vue De Chine which was a numbered set of around 100 views.
