Less well-known than his brother Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) James was also a photographer during the American Civil War (1861-1865). At first working with his brother in the studio of Mathew Brady. In May 1863 the two brothers opened a studio together in Washington and later that year photographed the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1863) and the Siege of Petersburg (June 1864-April 1865). Some plates by James Gardner are included in Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War. Incidents of the War (2 vols., 1866).
