He followed the role of his father, art dealer Rene Gimpel, and also became a member of the French Resistance during the Second World War with his Croix du Combattant Volontaire 1939-45 (France) in the collection of the Imperial War Museum (UK - catalogue NO: OMD 4209). He collected Inuit Art in the Baffin (Qikiqtaaluk) and Kivalliq (formerly Keewatin) regions of Canada between 1958 to 1969 and took photographs. Some of his photographs along with their copyright was passed to Library and Archives Canada by the copyright owner, his wife another distinguish figure in the Resistance, Kay Gimpel.
