A half-plate negative of a ceremonial spade or shovel by Elkington, which was presented to Queen Victoria on 6 May 1882 (RCIN 50179, WC North Corridor 119).
Queen Victoria travelled to Chingford, Epping Forest, from Windsor Castle, on 6 May1882, with the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and her daughter Princess Louise, where there were met by the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Henry Knight. Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught was the first Forest Ranger. Later that evening, Queen Victoria received news of the Phoenix Park killings in Dublin, in which two senior English officials, Lord Frederick Cavendish and Thomas Henry Burke were murdered by Irish rebels.
