Introduction
An American Gallery - the newest book from Lumiere Press, released in September 2007 in celebration of 25 years of the Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York. The story of the gallery is vividly chronicled by New York art writer Lyle Rexer in an introductory essay that positions Greenberg as the gallery of "classic photography". The books centerpiece is a portfolio of 25 masterful photographs drawn from Greenberg‘s personal collection, each paired with his assessments and recollections. In the fine press tradition the book has been composed in lead type, hand printed and hand bound in an edition of 250 copies.
The text has been composed in lead in Kennerley Old Style on the C4 Intertype, with Parsons for display, and printed letterpress by hand on a Vandercook Universal III on Nideggen mould-made paper, a "sand"- colored sheet with a unique laid pattern. The endpapers are "brick"- colored Bugra, a mould-made sheet. The book measures 7 7/8 x 11 1/8 inches; 98 pages. The pattern design on the cover is by Michael Torosian, based on elements in Frantisek Drtikols photograph "Thorns", and printed on 100% rag paper. The book is housed in a slipcase wrapped in "brick" colored mould-made paper.
