The subject of this photograph is Livland. This is located roughly in the southern half of present-day Estonia and the northern half of today's Latvia. The Baltic German Transéhe-Roseneck family made their home on an estate in the the town of Balvi, located in the Latgale region of eastern Latvia. (Source: Wikipedia)

Additional details of the Transéhe-Roseneck family and possibly Baron Rudolf may be gleaned from a recent book published by the Museum of Foreign Art in Riga, Latvia. The book features the collection now housed at the museum formerly in the collection of Jaungulbene nobleman and art collector Paul von Transehe-Roseneck (1853-1928).
