With Brandt's stamp, "1/28/46" in pencil, and this in bold pen: "Hardy's Wessex/ Bindon Abbey (Wellbridge Abbey in 'Tess') mentioned in: 'Tess' chapter XXXV, XXXVII. On the right is the stone coffin in which Angel Clare, walking in his sleep, laid Tess." Brandt loved these novels and sought out the locations, and tried to express how he felt about the passages he was illustrating. The somber character is well represented.
