1901 (?)
Book cover for C. Johnson, 1901 (?), The Yangtse Gorges: A Photographic Souvenir, (China: no place)

Book cover
Stockholms Auktionsverk
20 December 2016, Rare Books, Maps & Manuscripts, Lot: 6413

Small 8vo (195x160 mm binding). 30 pp and 1 folding map at the end. With 14 silver-print photographs, size c. 100x105 mm (each accompanied by a page of decriptive text).

Original dark red cloth with title on cover, partly split inner hinges, partly warped covers, slight wear.

A scarce pictorial book of the longest river in China, the Yangtze.

From the preface of the author: "This small book is not intended to give a detailed account of the Gorges. It is more of a souvenir for those who possess no camera, or having one have been unfortunate with the weather. Some descriptive notes are given, also other useful information. Distances are quoted, and given a fair average speed of 7.5 knots for the upbound vessel, the time of passing the various places can easily be calculated".
