The horse's owner holds him. At left a blacksmith works at his forge; another lifts the horse's leg, his box of tools beside him. This has been copied (at an angle) from a whole plate (or larger) tintype, which has been nailed to the wooden side of a house or barn-- in my view this enhances the character of the scene.
