This is Arthur James Lyon Fremantle of the British Coldstream Guards. He was an unofficial observer from the British Army with the Confederate Troops. He watched much of the fighting from the Confederate side, and met with many of the major leaders including Lee. His most important role was as observer at Gettysburg "practically at Lee's elbow." His war diary has been published. This is an oval salted paper print vignette portrait, 3 5/8" high, removed from an album. It shows him ca. 1860, before his involvement with the Civil War.
