This print is taken from the an issue of the short-lived periodical Sun & Shade, that most remarkable publication of Ernest Edwards' New York Photo-Gravure Company, which sought to portray pictorialist photography as a true art form. Billed as a "Picture Periodical Without Letter Press," each issue of Sun & Shade provided its subscribers with a choice selection of finely produced photogravure and photogelatine prints, taken from the works of leading professional and amateur photographers of the day.
