Artist statement:
This body of work consists of a series of photographs of urban spaces and environments that at first may appear to have a documentary function. But the work is not a document or typology of urban space. There are no people or conscious narrative present. The momentary and superfluous have been removed and the spaces are rendered with a still life, out-of-time character. They frame the physical city to allow a refocusing from the congestion and perpetual motion readily associated with the urban world and seemingly reorder what is familiar and real. The urban spaces comprising this project have, simply, been reduced to a portrait of an ambiguous reality.
Having worked for many years as an urban planner in New York before becoming a photographer, I learned to use plans, maps, and other graphical representations to depict information about the city and to make sense of the infinite numbers of possibilities and variables in a logical and systematic way. But so much of the power the physical city exerts on its inhabitants is not based on knowledge and fact. Urban experience and the influence of this environment consist of infinite subjective forces, reactions, and interpretations. In these images a stage has been set to allow a reimagining of common structures, objects, and conditions that infinitely surround and confront us in the urban landscape and the overlooked, unexpected, and ambiguous tension inherent in this conditionPreparing biographies
