Contextual notes: During the American Civil War (1861-1865) the cameras were not able to photograph movement with any fidelity and therefore more static subject were selected. The dead were a natural if macabre choice but there has been considerable discussion about the placement of the dead so that they provided the best visual composition. A contemporary account reveals that Felice Beato (ca.1825-ca.1908) did the same in some of his photographs of the Second Chinese Opium War (1856-1860). |
