| | Henry Fox Talbot Melrose Abbey, Scotland [Sun Pictures in Scotland] 1844 Salt print, from calotype negative Private collection of John Hannavy LL/31323 "The paper was prepared in the inn at Galashiels, several miles distant, and it retained its sensibility during some hours sufficiently well." William Henry Fox Talbot 1845
When Talbot arrived at Melrose in the late autumn of 1844, the abbey was deserted and overgrown - the romantic ruin so beloved of the Victorian artists and, later, photographers. (John Hannavy, 2008)
