This view appears to have been taken early in the morning, when there were few people around. It captures perfectly the main architectural elements of the square, the vastness of the open space, the magnificent façade of Santa Croce and the monument of Dante Alighieri which was erected in 1865 to celebrate Florence’s role as the first capital city of a united Italy.
