Born in Paris on 21 March 1788, Esprit Victor Elisabeth Boniface de Castellane enlisted in the army on the day that Napoleon I was crowned, 2 December 1804. Exactly 48 years later, on 2 December 1852, he was appointed a Marshal of France. He died at Lyon on 16 September 1862.
