Outside of the political arena other photographers including Misha Gordin, Scott Mutter and
Jerry Uelsmann use the darkroom and/or digital blending of images to create surreal and beautiful worlds in the tradition of
Max Ernst.
| The photomontages of Jerry Uelsmann remind me of the haunted images of Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985) but here they are enhanced by the seamless blending of components into worlds that can not exist. Trees float above lakes, a boat rests on the floor of room with a ceiling of clouds. These are fantasy worlds that are frequently a homage to the surrealist artists such as Max Ernst or Man Ray - but done with a respect for the original, imaginative twists and mastery of tonal craftsmanship. | | [Checklist] | Click on image for details [Copyright and Fair Use Issues] |
