Outside of the political arena other photographers including Misha Gordin, Scott Mutter and Jerry Uelsmann use the darkroom and/or digital blending of images to create surreal and beautiful worlds in the tradition of Max Ernst.

The photomontages of Jerry Uelsmann remind me of the haunted images of Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985) but here they are enhanced by the seamless blending of components into worlds that can not exist. Trees float above lakes, a boat rests on the floor of room with a ceiling of clouds. These are fantasy worlds that are frequently a homage to the surrealist artists such as Max Ernst or Man Ray - but done with a respect for the original, imaginative twists and mastery of tonal craftsmanship.
