In 1842, at an early period when Talbotís instructions were brief and little understood, Baxter published his popular The Calotype, Familiarly Explained, interpreting Talbotís directions in a clear manner and supplementing them with practical tips from Dr. John Ryanís series of lectures at the London Polytechnic Institution. Prior to the publication of George Smith Cundellís 1844 article ďOn the Practice of the Calotype,Ē Baxterís Calotype was one of the few clear and concise descriptions of how both to prepare the necessary materials and to take a photograph. Irish by birth, shortly after publishing his manual Baxter graduated from Aberdeen University and became a surgeon, serving first in the Osmanli horse artillery in Turkey in 1854 and later as a volunteer surgeon major to the French army at Constantinople. In later life he was the editor of the Medical Record. Baxter did not exhibit, and no examples of his work are known to have survived.
