Active in encouraging the teaching of science in Birmingham in Great Britain. He became the Chief Science Master to the Birmingham School Board in 1880. As an amateur photographer and photo-historian with a fascination in the natural sciences, particularly geology, he saw the applicability of using photography as both a teaching and documentation aid. He also authored "A History of Photography written as a Practical Guide and an Introduction to its Latest Developments" (Bradford: Percy Lund & Co. & London: Trubner & Co., 1888).
