He blended the skills of a botanist, photographer, farmer, author and teacher and although he never worked as an artist his remarkable hand-painted or tinted 4 x 4 inch glass lantern slides showing botanical specimens that he meticulously coloured show considerable talent. He studied botany at Cornell University but did not complete his studies and carried out farming, librarianship and teaching natural history at the Edmonton and Calgary Normal Schools. His aptitude for botany was considerable and he published on this subject and had three species named for him.
A collection of his coloured glass lantern slides and other material is held by the Provincial Archives of Alberta, Canada. 25 albums of his photographs were given to the National Museum of Canada.
