|Dates: ||1820 - 1881|
|Born: ||France, La Rochelle|
He was born in France and learned the paper negative process from Gustave Le Gray before emmigrated to America in 1848. In 1853 he undertook a project on New York City using paper negatives recording the facdes of the businesses on Broadway. This is a rare example of the use of this technique in America and, as the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History points out, an unususal example of an early photographer carrying out a project "just to please himself".
