Victor Keppler
Victor Keppler was one of the most successful commercial photographers in the U.S. Born into a New York immigrant family. Keppler embraced photography early in his teens. He became independent in the booming mid 1920's, and eventually working with America's largest advertising agencies, most notably BBDO. The ad agency in NYC, the studio was known to be one of the best in the business and almost exclusively dedicated to commercial work. Keppler did a large number of advertising photographs as well as cover photos for the Saturday Evening Post. He shot the first color-photo cover (Carbro color process). Victor received many awards for his commercial photographs and was the founder of the Famous Photographers School in Westport, Conn. in 1961 until 1972. Famed photographers who ultimately became part of the Famous Photographers School guiding faculty were Richard Avedon, Richard Beattie, Joseph Costa, Arthur d'Arazien, Alfred Eisenstardt, Harry Garfield, Philippe Halsman, Irving Penn, Bert Stern, and Ezra Stoller.
He was a past president of the Photographic Administrators Inc., Society of Photographic Illustrators, and trustee at the Photographic Hall Of Fame. Also, published a technical manual, The Eighth Art: A Life of Color Photography (1938), and an illuminating autobiography, Man + Camera (1970).
