Preparing biographies Val Wilmer is a photographer and writer particularly interested in black music, and is best known for her photographs of musicians. Her exhibition "Jazz Seen: The Face of Black Music", held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1973, unusually showed performers at rest, as well as practising and in concert. With Maggie Murray, Wilmer founded ‘Format’, the first all-women photographers’ agency in Britain, in 1983.
