| Dates: | 1845 - 1905 | One of the most influential philanthropists of Victorian Britain. After founding the first "Dr Barnardo’s Homes" in 1870 at 18 Stepney Causeway, to take in homeless waifs and strays his organisation spread rapidly through the country and by the time of his death in 1905 there were 112 district homes. Children in their teens were trained, feed and cared for whilst their aptitudes for future employment were assessed.
In 1874 Dr. Barnardo opened a Photographic Department and each child was photographed on arrival and again several months later to show their improvement. Studio photographer Thomas John Barnes (1809-1901) was employed to take these 'before and after' photographs of children.Preparing biographies
