Names: | | Dates: | 1826 - 1895 | Active: | US | American photographer who worked for E. & H. T. Anthony the photographic supply and publishing company of New York during the American Civil War. In early April 1865 he was assigned by the firm to General Montgomery Meigs who was Quartermaster for the Union Army.
Stereographs project Business locations New York, NY, US (Alan Griffiths, 20 February 2023) He published, under agreement, the stereoviews taken by Dr. Isaac Israel Hayes and his colleages on their 1860-1861 Arctic expedition. Roche did not visit the Arctic.
[6-9] *[Thomas C. Roche] "Publisher, Photographer and Inventor". Long & varied
career; first listed in NYC 58 as "agent" (for
shipping companies); by early 60s was photog. &
working on emulsions and varnishes. First
images attributed to him are of Central Park,
Niagara, Hudson River and Catskills, 61, pub. by
Anthony. He pub. series of ~82 views taken by
I.I. Hayes during his 60-61 Arctic Exped., prob.
using Anthony facilities. Civil war career
confusing, may have worked for both Anthony and
Brady for some periods; was certainly photog.
for union army; took views at Petersburg near
end of war. Remained free-lance worker at least
to 63. After war, went with Anthony full-time,
became chief photog. ~69, spent rest of career
with that co. Made fine series of CA, Yosemite
(71), Big Trees, UPRR & CPRR routes; late
60s/early 70s took many views of the South,
including GA & FL; prob. took many more images
which were issued by Anthony but not credited.
70s/80s, when Anthony discontinued making new
stereos, Roche turned to lab and hardware
development; made great improvements in
emulsions, photomechanical reproductions,
transparencies and carbon techniques; awarded
medals 77-78 for carbon images. 81 received
patent for bromide paper emulsions, 84 patent
for a non-solar enlarger. Most patents assigned
to Anthony, but royalties kept him comfortable
financially; wrote handbook of photog. for
Anthony 84. B. 28 Ireland, retired from co. 84,
but continued as technical advisor until death
