One of the most influential picture editors of his generation and a founder of pictorial journalism and the photo-essay. Worked in his family's photographic studio in Budapest and in early silent films in Vienna and Berlin. He was editor of Münchner Illustrierte Presse. Arrested when Hitler came to power and this was related in his autobiographical book I was Hitler's Prisoner (1935). In England he edited Lilliput and Picture Post. In 1940 he moved to the United States and edited photographically-illustrated history books including Lincoln, his life in photographs (ca. 1941) and Pittsburgh: The Story of An American City (1964) which contained photographs by W. Eugene Smith.
 
The Stefan Lorant collection is housed at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, California.
