Artist statement:

Transitory

I have a love affair with light. My photographs are about giving viscosity to light - making light itself a three dimensional object. It is a central character in the stories I tell, offering brief passage to a world void of linear events. What remains in my images is the suspension of time or absence of consequence, leaving the echo of the places and things I have felt, not seen.

The Transitory series is about the discovery of something familiar offering a secret, a glimpse of it’s true nature. The images describe the space between - a physical abstraction and presence of what these structures are, versus the environment they occupy. Through themes of electricity, shadow and solidity, I have rendered static structures as symbols, displaying an unexpected beauty and graceful clarity, sentient.

I work with a Hasselblad camera and Tri-X film. I find the simplicity suits me, providing an ideal negative for my images and printing style. The final prints are gelatin silver, bleached and toned in various combinations of sepia, selenium, and gold. A close friend remarked my photographs seem to say, “Let me show you something you may have missed.” I believe that to be a fitting introduction to the images I make.

Gotham

This city has long been a sanctuary for those who tell stories.

I had dreamt of this place before ever standing in it’s grandeur... wanderings through movie sets and stages, places described in song. Not exactly New York City, but rather the imagined beginnings of fable, truth and possibility. Gotham is past and future manifest in a present displaying both simultaneously. It is a city about layers and myth - architectural, cultural, universal.

These images evolve my obsession with light, constructing ephemeral passage to the atmosphere of a place felt, not seen.

For this series I primarily work with plastic cameras using Tri-X film. I prefer the simple design and their unexpected nature has a mystery of it’s own. The small profile offers anonymity and the ability to be invisible while discovering images. The final prints are platinum/palladium on hand coated cotton paper from enlarged negatives.
