Timeless Kyoto: Images were assembled in 2005 and are the outcome of two weeks spent photographing the temples and shrines of Kyoto, Japan. I lived in Japan with my missionary parents from 1949 to 1955, then returned for a year of postdoctoral study at the University of Kyoto in 1969. I have been strongly influenced by Japanese culture and art ever since. Kyoto has thousands of temples and shrines, each of them an island of antique serenity in the bustle of a modern concrete and asphalt city. These images are my attempt to capture the beauty and timeless quality of these structures.
Visions: I have struggled for years to find a fresh way to portray the female nude. In 2006-2007 this work began to settle on images of fantasy - women portrayed as angels, faeries, seeresses and so forth. Instead of treating the body as statuary or simply an erotic object, these images are more a glimpse into an ongoing tale or myth. I hope they encourage viewers to enter this make-believe world and be part of the fantasy themselves.
Tales of the Tribe: This series began in mid-2007 and is ongoing. These images occupy a middle ground, half-way between photography and painting. I have always been frustrated with straight photography because I could never manage to assemble all the components I wanted in front of the camera, in just the right light, in the best composition, etc. Now I can more or less do what painters do - photo models in the studio, place them in any desired background, control the direction and mood of the light, and in general create what I see in my imagination. These images tell stories, although I usually do not know exactly what the story may be, and I depend on the viewer to supply much of the narrative. The people in these stories exist in a vaguely tribal setting, in another time different from ours. The ideas for these images continually bubble up from my subconscious and represent partially digested input from many different sources. A few of the sources that I know of are the Bible, Lord of the Rings, the Tarzan books, every science fiction movie I have ever seen, the paintings of Odd Nerdrum, Hieronymus Bosch, William Black and so forth. Photographers have been trying to make composites and story telling tableaux since the invention of photography. Henry Peach Robinson, Julia Margaret Cameron, Jerry Uelsman and many others did what they could with the technology at hand to create images beyond what the camera could capture in one shot. I feel I am firmly in that tradition, but in Photoshop I simply have a more powerful toolkit.
