Dates: | 1959, 2 June - | Born: | The Netherlands, Sittard | Active: | The Netherlands | Contemporary Dutch photographer. Portrait photography showing adolescents on the beach.Preparing biographies Rineke Dijkstra’s portrait series of schoolboys, teenage clubbers, adolescent bathers and post-natal women were exhibited at London’s Photographers' Gallery in 1997. Because her sitters are barely clothed, they seem both vulnerable and "self conscious" - in every sense of the term. The beach portraits were taken across Europe and America, from South Carolina to Croatia. The range of expression and poses available to the sitters is clearly restricted when stripped of possessions, clothing, and habitat. Each looks out at us, without any of the protection of the trappings of contemporary life.
