Scherra is impressing with her prejudice free approach, her documentary realism, without being random. She continues what has been the subject matter of photographers like Atget, Bandeau, Disderi, Fenton, Beato or Struss. The focal point of her lens refers to that of the human eye, one important reason to have an immediate access to the documented situation and its perspective. Things look familiar and yet leave space enough to explore them through our own history and point of view. Scherra’s images are an inventory of existence, which also questions: What will be?
[Contributed by OMC Gallery for Contemporary Art] Artist statement: Through the decades photography has been my tool to establish a moment as a visual experience. These moments, committed to people, architecture or landscapes of our world and manifested in the dark room as pure documents on paper, may appear in the eye of the beholder in an ideal case as an authentic, objective image of themselves.
Naturally they’re not that. They are far more a mirror of my subjective perception and interpretation, actually, if you like, they are an expression of my balance act to achieve objectivity.
For me, as a Documentary Photographer I see the challenge in overcoming this contradiction and the own point of view, which is based on descent, subjective perception and interpretation, in favor of establishing a general understandable image with a personal touch.Preparing biographies
