Artist statement:

"I didn‘t set out to be a photographer. Photography found me - it was an outgrowth of my love of landscapes and my background in geology. After college I moved to Utah and acquired a used 4 X 5 view camera. I then photographed my way through graduate school at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff where I studied geology in the Grand Canyon. I think what so captivated me about photography was being in the moment with my camera, which I found intensified the experience of being in the landscapes that I loved. Still, today, 25 years later, my deep love of nature is what I hope comes through in my images."

"Today, I shoot almost exclusively with digital cameras, while still keeping my images true to reality. I spend about six months each year teaching and photographing in the world‘s wildest and, I believe, most beautiful places. My favorite locations are Baja California, the Arctic‘s Svalbard, and Antarctica. In each, stunning landscapes are combined with rich wildlife for unparalleled photographic possibilities. Yet I still call the magical landscapes of the American Southwest home. My two recent books, Hiking Colorado‘s Geology and Hiking the Southwest‘s Geology, have brought me full circle, a profound experience. For me, photography is not just an art - it is a way of being in and connecting with the best of the natural world."
