French astronomer and the discover of Helium. He traveled widely for research and on scientific expeditions including - Peru in order to determine the magnetic equator (1857); work on the solar spectrum in Itay (1861-1862,1864), optical and magnetic experiments in the Azores (1867), Transit of Venus - Japan (1874), Transit of Venus - Algeria (1882) and took part in numerous solar ecilpse expeditions uncluding Trani (1867), Guntur (1868), Algiers (1870), Siam (1875), the Caroline Islands (1883), and to Alcosebre in Spain (1905). He was twice President of La Société Française de Photographie (1891-1893, 1900-1902). His "Atlas des photographies solaires" (1904) contained over 6000 photographs.
 
The National Maritime Museum (Greenwich, UK) has some examples of the plates taken with his "Photographic revolvers" that were used in astronomical work. His experiments influenced E-J Marey and his later work on chronophotography.
