He developed his photographic skills in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and took up photography fulltime after he left the service. He worked in fashion photography and for the film studios of J. Arthur Rank and Universal Pictures. His interest in continuing with the bromoil process, that had been largely neglected since the 1930s, was significant in reviving interest in the what was a disappearing art.
