Contemporary American black and white photographer.
(Press release, 14 August 2021) Storms

The adrenaline of seeing Mother Nature during some of her finest moments will be ingrained in me forever. It is a humbling experience - and I feel fortunate to have witnessed her power and grandeur over the past 12 years. My experiences are hard to describe in words

During this last trip (July 2021) we traveled over 6400 miles in 10 days crossing thru 10 different states - all in my quest/passion to photograph these storm systems. But this time the events of the last year made me more aware, opened my eyes wider and had a different effect on me. The effects of Climate Change have become obvious.

The current patterns are changing and they are accelerating faster than anyone realized or predicted. Just over the past decade the characteristics of the Jet Stream and the Gulf Stream have changed. Pandemics, droughts, devastating heatwaves, wildfires, massive floods, rising oceans are accelerating. As I sit here in my house in Lone Pine, CA in 103 degree heat I can hardly see the outlines of Lone Pine Peak and Mount Whitney as they are shrouded in smoke-filled skies from the wildfires in Northern California and Nevada.

Humankind needs figure out a way to live in harmony with the Earth. If not for us, for the future generations. This planet has existed for billions of years... and its climate is fragile but also more powerful than we can ever imagine. If humanity cannot figure out how to respect planet Earth, the planet will figure it out for us, and the end result will be devastating. It's already starting to happen.--Mitch Dobrowner

Artist statement:

The Earth is an ever changing eco-system. It’s existed well before we were here, and will hopefully be here well beyond the time leave it. It’s real, at times beautifully surreal, powerfully haunting and alive all at the same time.

While photographing, the world gets quiet around me….. things seem simple again – and I obtain a respect and reverence for the world that is hard to communicate through words. I get into a 'zone’ where time and space seem hard for me to measure. For me those moments are a combination of the exterior environment and my interior combining. Hopefully the images presented help communicate what I visualize during those times.

Supplemental information

While growing up on Long Island (Bethpage), New York (USA) - lost in my teens, worried about my future direction in life, my father gave me an old Argus rangefinder to fool around with. Little did he realize what an important gesture that would turn out to be for me.

After doing some research and seeing the images of Minor White and Ansel Adams, I quickly became "addicted" to photography.

To make a long story short, I left home at 21, quitting my job, leaving my friends, and family to see the American Southwest for myself. In California I eventually met my beautiful wife, together we had 3 children, became involved in our own design studio - and the tasks of running a business and raising a family took a priority to Photography. During that time I stopped taking pictures.

In early 2005 (20+ years later) inspired by his wife, children and friends - I again picked up my cameras. Today I see myself on a passionate mission to make up for years of lost time creating images that helps evoke how I see our wonderful planet.

I currently live with my wife Wendy, our 2 sons (Jason and Joshua) and daughter (Asia) in Studio City, California.

Process Statement

All the images presented have been captured on a combination of either 35mm black & white film and/or digitally. Most of my work today is now digitally produced. My current camera of choice is a Sony R1. All darkroom work is performed in a dry darkroom with minimal dodging and burning. Prints are produced using 100% archival cotton rag paper with pigment inks.
