Son of Captain Thomas MacNeill; educated privately; Madras Army, 1859-98, rose to rank of Major-General; served on Intelligence Department Staff, 1880-82; DAQMG, 1882-85; DAG and QMG, Burmese Expedition, 1885-86 (severely wounded); CB; commanded 14th Regiment, Madras Infantry, 1887-89 and 1890-94; AAG, Mandalay, 1889-90. Lithographs from MacNeill’s photographs are reproduced in his Maps and plans to accompany report and gazetteer of Burma, native and British (1883). Who was Who entry:
Son of James M. [sic] MacNeill (himself son of Captain Thomas MacNeill, 82nd Foot) and Isabella Louisa; married 1892, Rose Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Somers of mendip Lodge, Somerset. Joined Madras Army 1859; Captain 1873; Major 1879; Lieutenant Colonel 1885; Colonel 1889; Major General 1898; served on Staff Intelligence Department, Simla 1880-82; DAQMG 1882-85; DAA and QMG for Intelligence, Burmese Expedition 1885-86; severely wounded at action of Minhla, 3rd Burmese War; DAQMG until 1887; commanded 14th Regiment, Madras Infantry 1887-89, 1890-94; AAG, Mandalay 1889-90; distinguished service pension 1897; retired 1898.
