His work recorded New Zealand and Samoa, Tonga and Fiji in the Pacific from around 1900 to the 1920s. He worked as an itinerant photographer in South Island in the late 19th century and later moved to Wellington and had a studio at 57 Vivian Street from 1906 until 1908. He later worked as a land agent and by 1916 was a farmer. In 1930 he patented an improved livestock castration device and incorporated a company - Daroux Emasculators Limited.
 
Over 700 of his glass plate negatives and approximately 425 prints are preserved in the Louis John Daroux Collection, Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand.
