Supplemental information

Laurence Salzmann's preoccupation as a photographer goes back to the late 1960's. His signature work is rooted in the social-documentary tradition, generally concerned with how other cultures function in their own setting. Salzmann's work implies cultural messages, whether it is a vanishing Jewish community in Central Europe or portraits of residents of "Single Room Occupancy Hotels" in New York, or, body motion in a theatrical setting. His keen sense of observation of people and their environment through his "lens" decodes social/cultural idiosyncracies. His images, Salzmann remarks, are aimed to endure, as conveyors of knowledge and inspiration, long after the exhibits are over. He successfully completed several major, long-term projects in the U.S. and abroad.
