Dates:  1960, 13 September - 1994, 27 July
Born:  South Africa, Johannesburg
Died:  South Africa, Johannesburg
Active:  South Africa

South African photojournalist who recorded the racial tensions and civil unrest within his own country. He was awarded the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for a deeply disturbing photograph of a starving child in the Sudan being watched by a patient vulture. The sights he had seen left him deeply depressed and tragically he committed suicide.

"The Bang-Bang Club: Snapshots from a Hidden War" (Basic Books, 2000) by Greg Marinovich and Joao Silva is a first hand account of the photojournalists who covered the unrest leading up to the collapse of Apartheid.
