Photographer active in the Netherlands Indies, (Indonesia) in the late 19th century. From the 1870s he was court photographer to the Sultans of Yogyakarta where he took portraits of the royal family and the ceremonies and performances of the court. He also photographed the reliefs at Borobudur the ninth century Mahayana Buddhist monument in Magelang, Central Java. A book of his work "Cephas: Yogyakarta Photography in the Service of the Sultan" by Gerrit Knaap (Leiden, 1999) is available. His son Sem Cephas (1870-1918) also photographed in Indonesia.
