Over a four year period he took large plates and stereo views of Yellowstone and he also accompanied the 1872 Heyden survey. His work is little known and determining which prints are his rather than those of William Henry Jackson can be difficult. The complexity is added to by the fact that other photographers and publishers are known to have sold copies of his prints.

listed) park views; nearly identical sister neg.
to one of his views found in the series on the
park pub. by W.I. Marshall, Fitchburg, MA
[Marshall #5 = Crissman #61]; took all of
Marshall's series, sold him the negs. Cades
noted that Lovejoy & Foster view #324 is "same
view" as Marshall #84, and other L&J views look
similar to Crissman/Marshall images; his B/L is
identical to one pub. by C.D. Kirkland of
Cheyenne, WY., who only claimed he "published"
the views. Said to have been in UT, but no
views from there seen. Was chief photog. for
Barlow/Heap expedition (army engs.), summer of
71, which coincided with Hayden exped.; also
knew Jackson prior to that time in Utah; made
his darkroom avail. to Jackson in UT; Jackson
loaned him a camera in Yellowstone in 71.
